It's a food encyclopedia with classic and new recipes
I purchased this cookbook after enjoying another one of BHG books. I was looking for a cookbook I could use daily that would have both classic and new up to date recipes. This book has served me well for the past 6 weeks I have been cooking from it. It does feel like a food encyclopedia because it goes over cooking methods, tools to use and gives easy to follow instructions. It has all the classic recipes you want like mac and cheese, fried chicken, lasagna, meatloaf but newer and current recipes like buddha bowls, falafel, tandoor spiced chicken bake and walnut lentil burgers. Each recipe has a colored photo and there are so many recipes to chose from ( to many to count but close to 1,000 it does have over 700 pages). It is divided into 4 categories everyday cooking recipes, baking and sweets and preserving. Every recipe I have made so far has been delicious from the spaghetti pie to the Mediterranean tuna salad to the brownies. The recipes and the format of the book are 5 stars to me. I will point out that the paper used in this cookbook are very thin almost like what you would find in a magazine. That was a slight let down and why I took a star away from the rating. The book does stay open and lies flat no matter what recipe you are working on. You just need to be careful turning the pages so that the thin quality of the paper won't rip. Overall, I love this cookbook and am glad I purchased it.

This cookbook has always been a staple in my home! I love it and use it so much that I tend to buy the new version every 10ish years! This version is absolutely beautiful! The photos are great quality and in abundance! It has cooking tips throughout the book, along with education on the basics for beginning cooks. One of my favorite things about this book is the variation ideas for things like pancakes and muffins, where there is a basic recipe and they give you all sorts of ideas to change it up in different ways and they will tell you exactly what and how to edit to make the changes!

This is arguably the best cookbook I've ever seen. I'm 71, been cooking since I was six, have a rack of cookbooks six feet long, but I still treasure old fashioned books that tell you how to make something that tastes good and is NOT overly fussy. Plus something that's a little more modern, and will tell you how to make anything from vanilla pudding, white bread, or meatballs to pad thai or tandoori chicken. Lots of great pictures, lots of great tips, this book could make a real cook out of anyone. I hoped it would be good; I was literally astounded that it would be so great. I saw the other reviews criticizing the thin pages, I think that's overstated. They are fine, the hardcover edition is sturdy and will last a long time. The book lays flat, it will be easy to use, has some vegetarian and gluten free ideas, it's probably the best all-purpose cookbook I've ever seen. And the recipes were obviously written by people who actually know how to cook, more than 700 pages of them. I made my career as a journalist communicator, and this book communicates how to cook, with illustration. It's a masterpiece.

Bought this for my granddaughter and she loved it

My last edition of this cookbook was from 1992 so it was time to upgrade. I bought one for my grown son as well. This edition is fun to page through for the interesting and sometimes funny tidbits from previous decades. In an age where every recipe can be found on the Internet, it's so helpful to have a reference where every recipe has been tested. This was a hit as a Christmas gift. My only criticism is that I wish the pages were not quite so thin, because this book will be getting some use. Hopefully a splatter won't ruin a whole page or two.

I purchased this so I could have it, because my mom has 1 from either 1990 or 1991, that I grew up seen her make recipes out of. The only complaint I have is it doesn't have 1 of the recipes I really have been wanting to try, that is in my mom's cookbook that we've never had the chance to make. It makes the stained glass cookies Recipe. If it's in there I haven't found it yet and I haven't been able to find it via the index.

This is my 5th rendition. I have gifted this cookbook to several people, it is by far my favorite cookbook. It covers all the basics of cooking. The recipes are tried and true. I love the anniversary edition, it shares a lot of history of the cookbook and their test kitchens.

I bought this for my mum. It is brilliant!
It is a perfect balance of the old and the new!
I loved how it had pics and photos of the first editions throughout it.
The pages are more magazine like in texture and thinness, but in a way it actually suits it.
It is always so good to have a cookbook that you know that whatever receou you try it will work!
