I had been interested in photography since the age of five, cleaning through a large supply of disposable cameras and eventually getting access to a 3.4MP Sony point-and-shoot. With the growth of cameras inside cell phones, the best camera I had access too for many years was whatever was inside my phone. Wishing to extend beyond the intuition and fundamentals of taking photos and actually understand the mechanics of shutter speed and aperture, I acquired a Nikon D3400 with a kit lens and one of these bad boys.
It performs essentially like a "Nifty 50" would for a full frame camera. With a maximum aperture of f/1.8, anyone who has only used a kit lens will see a huge leap in a few areas of usability, mostly with regard to shooting indoors and in lower light scenarios. When shooting wide-open, you can also get the forever pleasant and trendy "bokeh" that gives you a more organic form of subject isolation iPhone portrait mode users can only pretend they have access to. If you close down the aperture a bit, the sharpness increases substantially, which is excellent for when you have plenty of light.
Compared to a kit lens like the 18-55mm, the autofocus does not perform as quickly, though it does perform well enough. I recommend using a single point if you aren't using a camera with a more sophisticated af point array, in which case you'd have money to drop on a more sophisticated lens. Other concerns for those who've never shot on a prime lens before is that you cannot zoom, so you may encounter limitations you hadn't anticipated coming from a phone or point-and-shoot.
For anyone who is truly interested in getting deeper into photography, or anyone who is looking for the perfect gift to go alongside a new Nikon APS-C DSLR for an aspiring photographer in the family, you can't spend 200 dollars in very many better ways.
